Smart Utility Management for Gated Communities in India

In India, gated communities consist of 500 to 2,000 high-rise apartments, with gas, water and electricity measured by sub-meters. After construction, management is transferred to associations or societies, which oversee utilities through property managers. However, traditional utility meters rely on wired systems, incurring high infrastructure and maintenance costs. Developers face significant expenses when installing wired communication cables, and societies struggle with maintaining these systems, facing wear and tear, data loss and frequent replacements.

Ripple addresses these challenges with its wireless LoRaWAN smart meters, eliminating the need for costly infrastructure. The meters communicate wirelessly with gateways, transmitting data to a cloud-based system. This solution saves developers up to ₹20,000 (€225) per apartment on infrastructure costs. In a typical 1,000-apartment project, this results in savings of ₹2 Crores (€225,000). To date, over 60 gated communities across India have adopted Ripple’s solution, with more than 50,000 smart meters deployed and 250+ gateways installed.

Alt text: Three-panel image showing different smart metering technologies in India: left panel displays multiple digital electric meters with colored wiring, center panel shows a Ripple water meter installed on a pipe, and right panel features an RLSG-013 LoRa Wireless Smart Gas Meter with digital display. These devices represent the IoT transformation of utility metering systems in India.

Ripple's solutions eliminate wear and tear, ensure reliable data communication and provide a prepaid billing system. Long-term savings are achieved through the absence of physical infrastructure, reducing maintenance and replacement costs. Additionally, Ripple's LoRaWAN technology offers better coverage, lower costs and scalability compared to alternatives like NB-IoT or 4G, making it the preferred choice for utility management in gated communities.

"Using Ripple Smart Meters powered by LoRaWAN communication not only saved our CAPEX and maintenance costs, but also ensured upfront payments from residents for gas, water and electricity. The efficiency and reliability of smart metering have transformed our utility management system."
